the anti-nordstrom sale post: why i have not, am not, and will (probably) never shop the nordstrom anniversary sale

every summer the hoards of bloggers emerge for the annual money-maker event of the season. and to be honest the content never fails to be completely overloaded. but why am i so against a sale? because it’s the day before the public access, i’m going going to share why.

colors of cape town

we saved the best for last for the final stop on our african getaway: cape town! once we arrived to our hotel (although i wanted to stay here but they were completely sold out), i was so happy to finally have stable access to air conditioning, plumbing, and wi-fi! i unpacked all of my things immediately when we got to our room and my family and i started planning out our agenda. my brother and i went down to the concierge prepared with a list of dinner recommendations from our friends but little did we know that the weekend before new year’s eve was going to be one of cape town’s busiest! oopsies! so instead of dinner at places like the pot luck club and the test kitchen, we kind of just got whatever was available…and there weren’t many options.

busy bee

i am fully aware that i keep saying this but i am so behind on my photos! especially now that my photography program is in full swing at icp, my free time for my own photos is basically non-existent at this point. so i’m finally able to feature one of my favorite and comfiest dresses of the summer! i wore this dress out east when i escaped the craziness of nyfw this season with ashley…oh yeah and it has pockets!

because i’m basically up to my eyeballs in work, i’m keeping this post short and sweet! so enjoy! haha

end of summer...almost

tomorrow is the day we have all been waiting for…the first day of fall! i cannot tell you how excited i am to finally break out my sweaters and jackets! however, mother nature still wants to pretend like it’s summer for the next few weeks. so i guess the cashmere will have to wait. i don’t entirely mind though because this gives me the chance to squeeze in a few more summer dresses before the leaves start to change!

lay in lavender

this shoot was one that i had been dying to finally get the chance to do. two years ago, i stumbled upon a little piece of provence out in long island but never got a chance to make the trek out to the north fork of the island where lavender by the bay is located. then last year when i was finally able to coordinate my schedule with dana, the lavender was gone for the season! i was devastated (i mean dramatic but still). so i was determined to never miss this one again...aka i wrote it down in my calendar last year and the waiting game began. what seemed like an eternity later, dana, elle and i finally headed out the second weekend in july when i knew the lavender was going to be at its peak and it did not disappoint!

roses in rome

with a sharp contrast to the last post on prêt-à-provost where ashley and i leisurely went to the spanish steps during the middle of the day and there were swarms of people everywhere, this 5:30am call time gave us all the time to truly enjoy this tourist hotspot all to ourselves! well that was until the three guys who were still out from the night before left from the top of the steps...

all in a day's work

visiting the amalfi coast was everything i wanted it to be and then some. so on our last day in paradise, ashley and i wanted to do a day trip to visit every remaining inch of the coast. ashley had arranged a car to pick us up from our hotel in sorrento at the crack of dawn to begin our drive along the famous "blue ribbon" road. earlier in the trip, during our stay in positano, the wind was so strong that the picturesque umbrellas on the beach had to stay closed...so as we were driving past positano, i may or may not have had the car pull over so we could hike down to get "the shot." but hey, do it for the instagram right!? after we got the shot and hiked back up the 10,000 steps (ashley really loved me at this point) we continued up the road and stopped at the most famous fruit stand where we discovered our driver and the fruit stand owner were great friends haha!

orange you glad i didn't say lemon?

when in the amalfi coast, it is mandatory that lemons are incorporated in some way. thankfully ashley found a garden of lemons in sorrento and i got a little excited. obviously i had the perfect dress that had not only lemons on it but oranges! ...lemons citrus cousin haha! located in the back of a limoncello shop just down the street from our hotel, it was the perfect hidden gem!

easy, breezy, positano

while in positano, i knew it was going to be hot. so i was incredibly thankful i packed this super lightweight off the shoulder dress that kept me cool for ashley's and my adventures for the day! but don't worry, the sunscreen was on hand at all times because...well duh!

sunset in nashville

when ashley and i decided on nashville as our next trip, we thought it would be a nice break from the cold nyc weather (well at least for me because ashley lives in georgia!) and this would be a good opportunity to shoot some spring looks. however, we were shocked to see the weather forecast as the high 30s/low 40s for our entire trip and the weather channel even predicted snow for that saturday. uhh i'm sorry, what!? but with all of our spring looks packed, we had to make do! we originally had planned on stopping by the john seigenthaler pedestrian bridge (shown here) first thing in the morning after our arrival for a sunrise shoot but strong winds and freezing temperatures weren't exactly ideal. so we zipped off to a dunkin donuts to warm up and readjusted our schedule to stop at the bridge for the (cloudy) sunset.

a night at the ballet

while in vienna, the one thing at the top of my to-do list was to go to the opera house. the only problem? i'm not the biggest fan of opera itself. thankfully the opera house also houses the ballet and as a former ballerina, there was no hesitation when we purchased the tickets! knowing that i would be attending the ballet at the prestigious opera house, i of course had to come up with the perfect outfit. i had originally purchased this dress as a contender for the veuve clicquot polo classic in los angeles but decided against it as it was just a little bit too formal for the occasion. i'm so thankful i saved it for vienna as i truly felt like a ballerina!

sunny side up

as i mentioned here, embroidery is one of my favorite trends of this year. and of course, one of the pieces i suggested for you all, i had to end up getting for myself! this skirt was haunting me. so i made the purchase a few weeks ago right when it went on sale! it was fate. most of the time i'm an impulse shopper, but sometimes i have to stare at a piece for months before i can fully commit and with this piece, the wait was completely worth it!

luck of the irish

full disclosure: i am not at all irish...but i'm not at all mad about looking like a modern-day twenty something leprechaun in this dress. being a redhead (and irish imposter), i was always told to wear green and that it was "my color." me and my closet full of everything but green strongly disagree. but now and again, i get lucky and find just the right shade! what instantly drew me to this dress was that the base is an ivory and just the details were green: totally manageable!

dots and stripes

as always, the weekend before the fourth of july are completely dedicated to all things red, white, and blue. as mentioned here, my go-to uniform for the all-american festivities are based in blue and white with pops of red. i loved adding polkadots into the mix as it is (shockingly) a print that a rarely wear. and let's be honest, polkadots are about as close as you can get to stars without looking like an actual american flag.

la vie en rosé

i don't think it comes as a surprise that the veuve clicquot polo classic is my favorite event of the year! this is the third time i have attended the event and not without my favorite champagne partner in crime, dana - read about our first and second years too! at this point, dana and i have become experts at mastering the polo classic and, in my opinion, we completely nailed it this year. we hopped on the first ferry to liberty state park, where the match is held, and stood right by the door so we could be the first ones off...can you tell we were excited? although this is our third year, it was only our second year in the rosé garden. being one of the first to arrive, we were able to park ourselves at some prime real estate right up front to watch* the match.

santorini // float your boat

our time in santorini was almost up, but one thing that was still on our bucket list was to take a cruise around the island to watch the sunset. we were so lucky to work with spiridakos and joined one of their semi-private cruises complete with food and drinks. earlier that day, the waters were so rocky that they had to cancel their afternoon excursion but thankfully it was safe enough for us by sunset! we had a scheduled pickup at 3:30pm from our hotel to head down to the marina so andrea and i decided to have a leisurely lunch by the pool. what started out as relaxing, quickly turned into a frantic race to get ready because the car had arrived at 2:30!

catching the sunset

in a sea of blue and white, i knew i needed to shake things up and gave this city a classic pop of red. i decided to wear this dress on our first real night in santorini (i don't count the first one as we went to bed as soon as we arrived) and it paired so well with the sunset that night! it was perfectly flowy enough to keep me cool and it still allowed me to eat all the food at black rock. and the flowy dress was necessary because andrea and i ate all of the calamari they had in stock.

yellow gingham road

gingham is back baby, and i couldn't be more excited! it has been too long since i've worn my favorite spring and summer print and am so relieved that it is becoming a staple in my wardrobe. but what isn't a staple in my wardrobe is the color yellow...i know. i honestly can't tell you the last time i owned something in that color! i just have never thought it looked good with my skin tone so i would continue to bypass yellow when shopping. however, in the spirit of spring, i figured i had to give this pastel-perfect dress a shot! needless to say i was not disappointed.
